As Hindu American Society proposed a resolution to the South Brunswick Township Council to recognize the contributions of the Hindu Community and thereafter, the members of the council approved the same with majority in the meeting on September 26th.

Through this resolution, the township aims to acknowledge the contributions made by Hindu residents and increase awareness of the community. The Hindu heritage spreads a message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means “The World is one family”. This emphasizes the interconnectedness and unity of all people and nations, promoting a sense of global harmony, cooperation, and shared responsibility for the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.

South Brunswick has a sizable Hindu community and celebrates festivals based on the lunar calendar including Navratri, Garbha, Karva Chauth, and Diwali during the period of October-November.

The nine days of Navratri (nine nights) honor the divine feminine. In many parts of BHARAT aka India, this time is celebrated as Durga Puja, honoring the victory of Goddess Durga over evil. Several local organizations have planned to celebrate the Navratri Garba event in the township.

Karwa Chauth is an annual one-day festival that honors the Hindu god Shiva and goddess Parvati. It occurs on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik. On this day, married women fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the well-being of their husbands.

Diwali or Deepawali or the ‘festival of lights’ will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12th this year. It is one of India’s biggest festivals, celebrated by millions of Indian-origin people in several countries, and is an important festival for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs.
